Step by Step through painting a portrait

This is a little demonstration to show the progresion of work involved in painting a portrait of 'Pringle' a twelve year old Golden Retriever. Stage One

For any portrait I will usually take between 15 and 20 photographs of the head from many different angles

Stage Two

When I'm happy with the composition, the next thing to do is to cover all the white canvas and block in all the main features.

Stage Three

Now I will introduce white and start to use thicker paint.

Stage Four

This is where it gets more interesting as I add extra colours to my palette.

Stage Five

Now for the finishing touches. Small sable brushes are used to put in the finer details, particularly around the eyes.
