Stage 2.
When I'm happy with the composition, the
next thing to do is to cover all the white canvas and block in
all the main features. I'm not concerned with any fine details
or even with the colour yet, the tone is the most important thing
at the moment, as this will give the subject depth. At this stage
the painting is kept quite free and nothing is finalized. I like
to work with a fairly large brush and a rag, and plenty of turpentine,
That way I don't get tempted to overwork any one area.
